英文翻译技巧与领会

我们可以利用下面几组中文句子做英译练习，感受翻译实操思路。翻译不必追求中文与英文字词严格一一对应，可以灵活重组句式，复用给定英文原文里的核心词组。

中文练习句：

1. 我有满满一架子的书。
2. 文科生毕业就等于失业。
3. 真正有想法的学生不会辍学。
4. 没有主见的学生需要父母出谋划策！
5. 她们是温室中的花朵。
6. 高等学府是与现实隔绝的象牙塔！

参考原版英文长句：

I have a thick shelf of contemporary books assuring me that students at elite universities are merely excellent sheep, that a liberal arts degree is a ticket to unemployment, that truly inspired and courageous learners drop out of college to found tech companies, that millennials cannot make decisions without consulting their parents, that college professors have uniform political views, that students these days are fragile hothouse flowers, that it is not possible to achieve an inclusive campus culture without giving up on free speech, and that our colleges and universities are cut off from reality.

翻译要点领会

1.中文习惯使用多个独立短句表达观点；英文善于把多个观点收纳在同一个主句内，依靠多个that引导并列宾语从句构成长句，是英文书面文本非常典型的表达形式。

2.翻译看重语义等效，拒绝机械字面对应：

• “文科生毕业就等于失业”，译文使用a liberal arts degree is a ticket to unemployment，借助ticket to的隐喻含义，不去生硬直译 “毕业、等于失业”；
• “温室中的花朵” 译为fragile hothouse flowers，完整保留比喻修辞；
• “与现实隔绝” 选用固定表达cut off from reality；
• “没有主见的学生需要父母出谋划策” 转化为cannot make decisions without consulting their parents双重否定句式，契合英文表达习惯。
